Confessions: First Glance

This is a book I am reading for Hamden High School’s Book Club. I am excited to read this for a myriad of reasons, mostly because it is a mystery and it has to do with Japanese culture and schools.

This book is told from the perspective of a Japanese middle school teacher whose four-year-old daughter tragically dies in a pool. The teacher points the finger at a few students who she think have murdered her daughter, and according to the back of the book, plots revenge.

This is a crazy concept, and I cannot even conceive of how it will turn out. So far, it reminds me a lot of Great Teacher Onizuka, which is an amazing anime about how a teacher with a gang-infested past takes on a horrible class and through insane tactics, turns them around.

I wonder how the translation will hold up. Sometimes, in written work, it tends to be a little strange..

I’m excited, to say the least.
